Theosophical Correspondence.

Translation from German by Robert Hutwohl[1]

Question: — Is the “Theosophical Society” a yoga school?

Answer: — No! It could, however, become a preparatory school for it, if the three purposes it has set itself were properly followed by its members. Before a human being can become divine and thereby attain union with the deity, it must first become a “human being” in the true sense of the word. But that there are only a few such people was already known to Diogenes, who searched in vain for a human being with his lantern. The “Theosophical Society” is not an association of such chosen ones, but according to its constitution it does offer the means to turn human animals into humans. The main thing in order to become ready for yoga is that everyone truly recognizes God as the father of all beings and all humans as his brothers and acts in accordance with this knowledge; for simply believing a theory to be true is by no means knowledge. The theorist who goes to the school of wisdom comes out as a theorist. Much of what is trumpeted today as “theosophy” is nothing more than a game, and tolerance could best be promoted by adopting the motto: “Let each one sweep in front of his own door.”
