In the higher degrees of Freemasonry there is often talk of a “bridge crossing”, and in the Catholic Church the Pope is called “Pontifex Maximus”, i.e. the supreme bridge builder. Since neither the Freemasons nor the Pope are concerned with the building of visible bridges, it is clear that these terms have a secret meaning, and it is all the more important to recognize their meaning, since our entry through the triumphal arch (Royal Arch) into the Temple of Wisdom depends on our “bridge building” and “bridge crossing”.
We need not rely on the teachings of the Indian sages or the Christian mystics, but only observe for ourselves to know that there are two regions of the soul or forms of consciousness within us, the higher of which strives for the high and ideal, while the lower is bound to the material and is attracted to the sensual.
